A Personal Piano Story: How Self-Expression Heals and Creatively Expands

For those of you who don’t know me or my personal history very well, because I really don’t talk about it too often, I am a music fanatic. From the time I was eight years old to about 16, I played the piano. The piano evolved into the clarinet, the oboe, the flute, and then a drum set. You could say the piano was my "gateway" instrument (as opposed to a drug, thank goodness!). Why? Because, as I'm rediscovering, self-expression heals.

I quit playing piano specifically at about 16 because, well, I was a teenager, and there were a lot of personal things going on in my life that took precedence. Seems to be a pattern for a lot of empaths and healers. We do tend to put others before us, don’t we?

I also found that I was comparing my playing to others as I became more (not by choice) competitive in my performing. It became overwhelming, and I felt I was losing the art of self-expression and the use of art merely to emote due to the expectations of others.

You see where this is going…

In my 2023 post closing out the year, my resolutions for 2024, I decided that I was going to pick up piano lessons again with a teacher to hold me accountable for practicing. I realized the absolute importance of using my artistic gifts as a means of “journaling” my life through the keys. I realized that art is about the communication of one’s self in their highest form, and it is indeed a gift from a Higher Power. That to deny that art is to deny the SELF, the soul.

Why not use and share my gifts?

I promised myself that I would indulge in how self-expression heals through my hands, from my heart, and emote through my very being into the piano keys again - why I played the instrument to begin with. Not to compete or be perfect, but to feel and to BE.

I share this Chopin piece and hope to share other works I’m polishing to demonstrate the importance of the feeling, sentient beings we are, through the body. And to illustrate that it’s ok to be vulnerable. Chopin was a composer during the Romantic Era, so I hope you can close your eyes and feel the dynamics, the passion. (A little musical history)

You may not play piano, but I know that you have at least one way to self-express that provides a release and therefore expansion of your soul's song and self-expression. It could be painting, sculpting, writing, coloring, knitting, gardening, etc. Whatever your creative super power, just remember that it brings you back to you!

When the chaos kicks in, go back to those, YOUR, basics: your sentient BEING.

Enjoy the music! And if you’re not a classical piano music fanatic but still appreciate some healthy sound-healing alignment, I should be recording and sharing my bowls again soon.

Much love and healing,

Jess
