Ever have something you were so passionate about, but you told yourself it was impossible so you didn’t do it? Ever regret not doing things or taking advantage of opportunities in your past only to realize that the window of opportunity was gone and, though you don’t "regret" it today necessarily, you wonder how life would be had you headed in that direction? If you answered, "No," to any of the above questions, I can logically deduce that you are not human. Regret and self-doubt are part of the human experience – it is the overcoming of them that makes us great.
Negative thinking is something we all tackle. The "what ifs" invade our thought processes, and we go to that dark place of self-doubt. But, once we learn to forgive ourselves and look at our mistakes as a means of healthy change, we can overcome whatever the underlying fear is – because that’s really what self-doubt stems from – and move on.
I love Art Williams’ speech, "Just Do It." He is inspirational and totally spot on, to say the least. The hardest part of following your passion, once we discover what it is we are passionate about, is actually "doing" it. Art nails it to the ground by reminding us that if it is something we really want to do, just do it! Seems so simple, so why is it so difficult?
Because we doubt. Because we are fearful. Because we tell ourselves that if we strategize and prepare and think it to death, everything will be perfect! Right?
The only answer I have for moving past the doubt and fear is to really tackle what it is that we are afraid of in the first place. The most influential people in the world had their fears, I’m sure, but it was through tackling them that they made an impact, a change, and shifted society’s perspective on the whole. We are ALL capable of greatness.
Follow your intuition, do what you love with reckless abandon, and get the most joy out of life. That’s my advice for now. Just DO IT!
